Halifax citidel history

Orignial Buliding

You may not believe it but the citadel started small, as only temporary fort with a flag and a guardhouse near the top of the hill. Built in 1794, when the town was founded, it sat near the top of the hill just east of the present citadel. It was designed as a defence strategy, keeping watch over Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, Lunenburg and Lawrencetown making sure enemies stayed away with the other forts, Horsemans fort, Cornwallis fort, fort Lutrell and Grenadier fort.
