Historic Period -
During the early 19th century, a traveler noted that there was a settlement on Point Pelee with approximately 100 Chippewa First Nations. He added that these residents grew a small quantity of corn and oats, but spent most of their time hunting and fishing.

Human History -
The spit was named by French explorers, who called it Point Pelee, meaning ''bald point'' for it's lack of vegetation. Now Point Peele is filled with an abundance of vegetation.
Exactly how long humans have lived on Point Pelee is unknown, but it is possible that pre European human occupation began several years ago.
