Biomagnification is when a increase of a pollutant occurs in a organism's system and is passed on to other organisms by consumption.

Biomagnification can be very harmful or not noticed at all depending on how much is consumed.

For example mercury is produced by coal mines and iron ore mines. the coal dust that the mine gives off produce mercury in the ocean.

The Coal dust get's

into the water, the seaweed get contaminated, the crab eats the seaweed and the fisher man eats the crab

The mine produces 500 units of mercury,250 go's into the ocean and the rest go's else where.

The seaweed now has 250 units of mercury in it.

The crab then eats 2 pieces of seaweed. It not has 500 unit of mercury in it.

The fisherman go's out fishing and sets his traps he ends up catching 5 crabs all of those crabs are contaminated with 500 units of mercury his wife and him eat 2 crabs each and now have 1000 units of mercury in them.
