Rabbitkettle Lake - Camping

By spreading the use of locations throughout the Nahanni area, Human impact is not as noticable. Therefore it is encouraged to exercise random camping throughout most of Nahanni Reserve.

Be aware that some areas due  to the popularity have several designated sites. It is requested that visitors keep to those designated sites.

Open fires are forbidden for all areas within all areas of the Nahanni Reserve. However it is permitted to use fires within camping stoves, fire boxes, fire pans and only in select areas with pre-established fire pits. Fire bans can be implemented at any time as forest fires are a possible high risk so bringing a gas stove is recommended, just in case.

Fees will be required for overnight camping and reservations are needed to stay at Virginia Falls.

Rabbitkettle Lake is equipped with campsites, one the park landing sites, food caches, a portage landing, and a staff cabin occupied during the summer months. One of the two campsites is within 300 metres of the staff cabin and situated on the shore line of the lake. The other is located on an island on the South Nahanni River.

There is a portage landing directly across from the island. There are food caches and outhouses  available for camper use, keep in mind that camping is not permitted in the portage landing.

The food caches located in the portage landing area are for the use of guests portaging only, to store food when on an interpretive hike.

Virginia Falls is a breathtaking sight, due to the popularity and extra utilities on site, Virginia Falls requires a fee and reservation to camp there. Virginia Falls is the only other area in Nahanni with a designated landing site, which increases its popularity. The campground is equipped with canoe racks, food caches and composting toilets.

The Boardwalk area is very popular throughout the year and due to this and natural weathering, the area needs to be under constant repair. Be careful of hazards such as loose boards, protruding nails and the edges of the boardwalk itself.

The portage area down stream requires extreme caution due to the proximity of the Sluice Box Rapids and the Virginia Falls. This requires you to always be ready for possible emergencies.

The Gate, also known as Pulpit Rock is highly frequented due to its beauty, however it is not a designated camping area. For your convenience composting toilets are available to use in the area, to reduce the impact on day trips and hiking. Be sure to visit this majestic site you won't want to miss it.
